Utilize Props and Set Dressing

Location scouting to find the right shooting location

While you might not think of it as such, photography is actually a sort of performance art. The photographer is controlling the scene, the lighting, and so on to create the best image they can. This means you can use props and set dressing to enhance your commercial photography and make your product look even better. For example, if you’re shooting a clothing company and using models, you can use props to play up the clothing and show it off in an even more flattering light. Props can include anything from the standard pieces like books, flowers, and glasses of wine to the more creative like guitars, cowboy hats, and more. The more props you have and can use, the more opportunities you have to create a specific vibe or impression with your photos and make your product even more enticing.

Select the right location

Annual Reports and Brochure Covers

If you want your commercial photography to be perfect and create the best image for your company, you’ll want to select the right location. Just as you would when you’re shooting a model, you want to find a setting that complements your product. For example, if you’re shooting food, you’ll want to find a location that’s well-lit and has a clean, modern look. You don’t want the setting to draw too much attention away from your product. You might also want to take into consideration the season when shooting a certain type of product. For example, if you’re shooting flowers, you’ll want to find a setting that has plenty of them in bloom. You don’t want to have to bring in flowers and create a false setting, especially if you have a tight timeline for shooting. You don’t want to rush and miss out on the perfect moment or setting.

Show off your product(s)

There are tons of commercial photography tips out there, but if there’s one we want to emphasize, it’s showing off your product(s). You want to highlight what makes your product special, what sets it apart from the competition, and draw the eye to it as much as possible. You can do this a variety of different ways, including with lighting and the way you frame shots. You may also want to shoot at an angle (such as from above) that makes your product look better than it would straight-on.

Choose the right type of shot

You’ll want to decide whether you want to shoot your product in a single shot, multiple shots, or a combination of the two. If you’re shooting a single shot, you’ll want a close-up shot of your product. This is the shot that’s going to be used for the most part, so you’ll want to make sure it’s perfect. You can shoot a single shot in a variety of ways, such as against a plain wall, in a bowl or plate, on a table, or on a clean surface.
